Finding Your True Parka Fit
A parka that's even half a size wrong tells on you the moment the wind picks up — sleeves creeping past your knuckles, or a hem that stops short right where you need coverage most. Since most of our outerwear is built with room for a base layer and a mid-layer underneath, sizing here works a little differently than a typical jacket. Here's how to get it right the first time.
What to Measure
Grab a soft tape and measure over a light shirt, not bare skin — you want numbers that reflect real winter wear.
- Chest: around the fullest part, tape level under the arms
- Shoulder width: seam to seam across the back
- Sleeve length: shoulder seam to wrist bone, arm slightly bent
- Torso length: base of neck to where you want the hem to fall
Fit Advice Worth Knowing
If you're between two sizes, size up rather than down — a roomy parka layers well and traps warm air; a tight one restricts movement and lets cold seep through the seams. Broad-shouldered builds often do better in a size up with the waist cinched by the drawcord, rather than sizing to the shoulders alone. And check sleeve length last: cuffs should reach your wrist even with arms raised, since that's when gaps open up in real cold.
